Mr Joel's backers include leading Monet experts John House, emeritus professor at London's Courtauld Institute and Paul Hayes Tucker professor of art at the University of Massachusetts. He has also been supported by Christopher Lloyd former surveyor of the Queen's pictures and Genevieve Lacambre, an ex-curator who owns 100 Monets.
Research commissioned by the programme confirms the artist painted it during his lifetime while he was living in Argenteuil, according to the Sunday Times.
